Every top sports coach and athlete knows that mental preparation plays an enormous role in their performance and success. When the pressure is on for them to succeed they need to be able to focus without being distracted, getting themselves into the zone where they perform at their best. This not only applies to competition work but also to sports and exercise in general when your goal is to enhance performance. This zone is often referred to as the ‘flow state’ where the person experiences a feeling of relaxed, highly focused concentration, a feeling of being so highly aware and deeply absorbed in what they are doing, so totally in the present moment, that everything else seems to fade away and time seems to stop. It is in this state of high focus that many peak performances are reached seemingly almost effortlessly. It is in this state in endurance sports that when the body starts to tire, the power of the mind and self-belief can take over and override the feelings and enable you to carry on.

The Player of the Inner game comes to value the art of relaxed concentration above all other skills; he discovers a true basis for self-confidence; and he learns that the secret to winning any game lies in not trying too hard.
And success breeds success as self-belief and confidence grows. But what happens when a plateau is reached and as much as you try to improve you fail? What happens when your winning streak seems to have gone and your performance drops and your belief in yourself seems to wane? Or perhaps performance anxiety or fear after an injury start to block your success.
You may have taken up running or started going to the gym to get fit and suddenly find that your motivation has gone and you can’t seem to get it back no matter how much you try. Or perhaps you have an injury and would like to learn how to use the power of your mind to prepare you for medical intervention or as an additional aid in your healing and get you back on track?
