I am often asked if you can be hypnotised without your knowledge and the answer is yes. For example while watching television or on your mobile phone you will often go into trance as your focus narrows down and you become totally absorbed. Once in trance the subconscious mind quickly absorbs repetitive suggestions(ideas). The suggestions are particularly effective if they are emotionally charged and from who you perceive as ‘AUTHORITATIVE’ figures and people you believe you can ‘TRUST’. The more sources the information comes from the more quickly the ideas are absorbed, particularly if the same words or slogan is used over and over again and any counter narrative is dispelled. The effect of the suggestions also increases the longer you listen to them. We are hard wired from childhood in this way.
This is exactly how we got programmed as a child, before our conscious mind developed which then gave us the ability to use critical thinking and analysis and be able to distinguish ‘right’ from ‘wrong’ and ‘true’ from ‘false’. During our early childhood years we were therefore absorbing someone else’s beliefs (or our interpretation of them) about ourselves and the world all around us. We took everything that was said to us as the truth
It is important to be aware that our conscious mind and thus our ‘critical thinking’ relaxes during trance which makes it far more likely that the subconscious mind will accept new suggestions. This is highly effective when hypnosis is used as a force of good for rapid change. However, when we are totally unaware that we are being hypnotised and programmed it can leave us extremely vulnerable to accepting ideas that we would normally question. And there lies the difference between covert hypnosis and the hypnosis used in therapy.
As most people are aware ‘suggestions’ (both verbal and non verbal) are also used in business, sales, advertising, marketing, politics and media to sway opinion and are part of our everyday lives. They can also be used covertly in conversational hypnosis without our conscious knowledge. Predictive programming is also used in major opening and closing ceremonies, the media, the film industry and television to get the population ‘used’ to an idea.
The criteria for programming is the following – trance, repetitive ideas from who you consider as ‘AUTHORATITIVE’ figures and who you believe you can ‘TRUST’ and emotionally charged words. As explained earlier, the more emotionally charged the suggestions are the more effective they become, particularly if they appeal to the idea of morally doing something ‘good’ in line with your beliefs. The suggestions are also far more likely to be accepted if any counter narrative is dispelled.
So you may well ask what is the difference between all this and the hypnosis used in hypnotherapy? The difference is that you are CONSCIOUSLY AWARE that you are coming for hypnosis..and that is the HUGE difference which leaves you fully in control, there is nothing covert about it. The hypnosis used is to empower you, free you from any old negative false beliefs that are holding you back and help you to reach your goal. Any suggestions and words used are discussed with you in full to find the ones that resonate with you and are used with your full awareness and CONSENT to bring about rapid change.
